“I was shopping and scratching the ticket at the same time, and at first it was hard to tell what I had won,” described Chacon on how she discovered she had the winner.  “I thought I’d only won $100, but then there were too many zeroes for that!”

Not believing she held a $100,000 winner in her hand, Chacon went to the Fred Meyer Customer Service desk and had the clerk check her ticket.  The clerk confirmed she had a big winner and needed to take the ticket to Boise. The instant she got the ticket back, she signed it and stuffed it in her purse.

As Chacon told the Lottery, her purse did not leave her side even when she slept or when she went to the Ft. Hall Casino, where, according to family members, she also won big.

Chacon and her well-traveled ticket arrived in Boise at Lottery offices late on Tuesday afternoon where she claimed her $100,000 prize.  This was the last top prize on Money Train, ending the game.  Chacon plans to take her family to Hawai’i for a vacation with her winnings.

For their part in selling the winning ticket, Jacksons Food Stores will receive a bonus of $10,000 from the Idaho Lottery.

“I matched my number and started to scratch off the prize. It was a 3, and those zeroes just kept coming,” laughed Cook as he described what happened Sunday when he scratched his $300,000 winner.  “After that, well, I never did end up going fishing.”

Cook claimed his prize winnings on Monday at the Idaho Lottery Offices in Boise.  He plans to use some of his windfall to pay bills and maybe take a fishing trip or two.

“I might just go fishing the rest of the week,” joked Cook. “And maybe the rest of the summer!”

The $300,000 prize on $300,000 Spectacular is the single largest cash prize ever offered by the Idaho Lottery for a Scratch Game^TM.  One top prize remains in the game.

Brett checked his tickets on the mobile website while sitting in his car on lunch break; he was bored and had a pile of them in his wallet. He found a ticket that won $150 and texted his wife right away, stating “I won $150, I’m going to go buy that shotgun now” and she responded “Ok, whatever.” Immediately after Brett sent the text, he checked another Mega Millions ticket and found out he won $10,000! Brett said that he’ll be keeping a thousand dollars or so and give the rest to his wife. Together they’ll pay off bills and as Brett said, they’ll get “a little closer to where they want to be.” He has two sons, 17 and 14 years old, who he frequently takes out target shooting; his proposed purchase of a shotgun will go to good use.

“Idaho and Idahoans have enjoyed playing scratch games since the dawn of the Lottery,” said Idaho Lottery Director Jeff Anderson. “We pride ourselves in the quality, fairness, prizes, and entertainment that our Scratch Games provide to all our players.  Year in and year out, Scratch Games account for about 64% of the Idaho Lottery’s overall revenue.”

Since selling its very first $1 scratch ticket on the Capitol steps on July 19, 1989, the Idaho Lottery has offered 999 different Scratch Games, selling nearly $1.58 billion.  Taters of the Moon, a $1 ticket that was the second place winner from last summer’s public Name that Scratch Game contest became the 1000^th game when it shipped to Idaho’s 1200 retail locations today. 

As a game name, Taters of the Moon was submitted to the Idaho Lottery by Hailey resident Gary Brower in July 2012.  The name itself is an obvious play on Craters of the Moon National Monument in central Idaho with a decided Idaho twist featuring its leading agricultural crop, potatoes.  The game artwork, illustrated by Idaho artist Pat Dougherty and designed by Idaho Lottery Marketing Director Sherie Moody-St. Clair, features potato characters in space suits pulling cash out of a crater on the lunar surface. The game comes with a top prize of $3,000.

“I am very excited about having my ticket be the 1000^th Scratch ticket for the Idaho Lottery,” said Brower. “I love Idaho, I love my community, and I hope this game generates revenue for the State’s education system.”

Over the past 24 years, Idaho has been recognized in the Lottery industry as a strong “scratch ticket” state.  Each year, the Lottery offers approximately 52 new scratch games on the market.  Idaho has distinguished itself as a national leader with 45 offerings of the Slingo^® game series. Cashword tickets, bingo-themed games, and Holiday Scratch tickets are traditional favorites every year.  

The Idaho Lottery marketing department has graphic artists on staff to create each individual game. Very few games are purchased from outside vendors.  The quality of the artwork over the years has fueled the games’ success.

“We take a lot of pride in our ticket designs. For us, it’s all about creating fun experiences for our players that helps generate revenue for Idaho’s Public Schools and the Permanent Building Fund,” explained Moody-St. Clair.  “Beyond winning prizes we hope the visual appeal and themes to our games make people laugh, like Taters of the Moon, or reflect the beauty of the Gem State as we showcased in our Great Idaho Cashword game to commemorate Idaho’s 150^thAnniversary.”

Moody-St. Clair highlighted several areas where the Idaho Lottery has been first in its industry to offer certain games, like Monopoly^TM, Battleship^TM, Bucks & Trucks, and energy drinks like BooKoo Bucks^TM.

“About 15 years ago, we worked with Sun Valley artist Jane Wooster Scott on a Happy Holidays games series,” added Moody-St. Clair. “The popularity of her work with us started a lottery industry trend to feature local artists on scratch tickets.”

Some of the more memorable Scratch Games offered by the Idaho Lottery in the past twenty-three years include Triple Dog Dare, the series Triple Dynamite 7’sand the Gem 7’s series.  And while the Idaho Lottery has offered nostalgia-themed games like Cheers^TM and Twister^TM, they also have had success keeping current with modern trends by offering games like Bejeweled^TM©, For the Love of Bacon, and Mustache Cashword.  Over the years, the Idaho Lottery has also partnered with major motion picture studios to offer games that coincide with blockbuster film releases including Bewitched^TM, Indiana Jones^TM and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull^TM, Sherlock Holmes, The Green Hornet^TM, The Avengers^TM, and Star Trek^TM©.

The Idaho Lottery maintains a variety of play-styles at various prices and top prizes of Scratch Games all year.  Currently, the Idaho Lottery is offering the largest single cash prize ever offered by a Scratch game, $300,000 in the game $300,000 Spectacular.

“I recognized I had four of the five numbers,” admitted Stebbins when he handed his ticket to the clerk at Super 1 Foods to check it the next morning, Sunday. “That’s when they said I had to get to Boise to claim my prize, that I’d won it, the whole jackpot.”

Five weeks later, on May 21, 2013, Stebbins arrived in Boise to claim his $77,381 jackpot prize, $1000 a week each week for the next year after taxes are paid by the Idaho Lottery.  When asked why it took so long to get to Boise to claim his prize, the understated Stebbins said, “Well, I do live 400 miles away. That’s a long trip.”

Stebbins says his first priority will be to purchase furniture for his new house that he’s since moved in to.

Weekly Grand is only played in Idaho.  Players that match all five numbers win the jackpot.  Since Weekly Grand debuted in August 2011, there have been 13 jackpot winners including three from northern Idaho. There have been 18 second chance winners on Weekly Grand that have claimed $100 a week for a year.  Eight of those winners have been from northern Idaho.

For their part in selling the winning ticket, Super 1 Foods receives a bonus from the Idaho Lottery of $7,738.

Petronella was holding onto a stack of Scratch tickets that were “smaller winners”…or so she thought. Upon having them scanned at the local Idaho Lottery retailer, she was told that she would have to take one of the tickets to the Lottery office in Boise. Come to realize, she missed scratching off one of the numbers on the Born To Bingo Scratch ticket; instead of winning $20, she won $28,000!

Petronella was born in Germany and already had a trip planned to return to Germany this summer to visit her family. This money couldn’t have come at a better time for her and she’s very excited to be at ease during the trip with her newly acquired winnings.
